The relationship between Candy and his dog and George and Lennie are similar for many different reasons. One of the similarities between the 2 relationships is that they both have been friends for a very long time Candy has had his dog since he was a puppy and George and Lennie have known each other since George had known Lennie’s aunt. Another parallel is that people don’t like Candy’s dog or Lennie the workers on the ranch don’t like Candy’s dog because the dog is very old. And the reason why people don’t like Lennie is because of him not being normal since he has a mind of a young child.
Quest for discovery in The Constant Gardner
Sandy Woodrow our main character is trying to figure out who killed his bosses wife Tessa. As well as they are trying to find out where a doctor is as he had fled the scene of the crime and it has been taken a toll onto Woodrow. But the book shifts to Justin as the main protagonist as he is trying to discover the truth about the murder of his wife Tessa as he also feels as feels that the murder could be connected to a larger conspiracy. As on 288 a line reads “some secrets are too big to ignore, and some truths are too painful to bear.” Justin is coming to realize that a pharmaceutical company in Kenya is corrupted and is trying to cover up the company’s flaws.

Challenged Books
I can’t remember any books that I have read that have been challenged. Some of the top reasons that books might get challenged are they might be too difficult to read, adult themes, or violence. Some of the different reasons that Flight might be controversial are because of the strong language and a lot of swearing. Dark themes, and gruesome parts of the book which might cause people to become uncomfortable. Some issues that are in this book that teens have issues with today could be struggling to express their feelings. Or struggle with keeping their emotions in check.
Similarities and Differences Between Zits and Teens Today
TIQA Paragraphs about Zits’ Emotions, Violent behaviors, and Not liking the way he looks
Similarities
Emotions
Dealing with anger – for 11-18 year olds

“Expressing your anger through aggression could lead to serious problems, like getting into trouble at school or with the police”
There have been many instances where Zits lost control of his anger and got him into fights and encounters with the police. Zits has a harder time controlling his anger because Zits does not have any family to help him or anyone else to help control his anger. This can relate to teens today since many things can make teens angry like stress, frustration, or just not understanding their feelings. Some teens bottle up their anger which can cause them to have explosive outbursts due to them not letting their anger out, which can cause them to get into trouble.
Violence

“In 2021, there were about 123,000 serious violent crimes committed by youths between the ages of 12 and 17 in the U.S. an increase from the year before”
Teens today have become violent by not having good living situations or not knowing how to control their anger. This can relate to Zits since Zits has trouble controlling his anger, which results in his becoming violent. Even though teens today can have people help them maintain their anger better, meanwhile Zits does not have anyone to help him. Teens have expressed their anger through physical fights, and harming others which relates to Zits throughout Flight since Zits has gotten into fights because of his anger.

Teenage Low Self-Esteem Statistics

“1 in 3 high school students in the USA experience persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, an increase of 40% since 2009”
Teens today have many causes for low self-esteem, which can include a lack of parental nurturing, a perception of physical appearance, their peers, or just high expectations. This can relate to Zits with the lack of parental nurturing due to not having any parents. As well as Zits does not like the way he looks, which could be a cause of low self-esteem. But teens today have more help with their low self-esteem because of their parents or going to counseling. Meanwhile, Zits does not have any help due to him being in the foster care system.
Differences
Emotions

“Although young people learn to describe basic emotions earlier in life, as they get older, they develop an ability to truly grasp what emotions are and understand their impact.”
Teens today have more help to control their emotions than Zits does in Flight. Teens today can have their parents help them, teens can get counseling, or even just talking to someone about their emotions. Meanwhile, Zits does not have any of that because Zits does not have any parents and Zits is in the foster care system, so Zits does not have any help in controlling his emotions. But not all teens have the help that teens need. Sometimes teens might just not open up about their emotions, which can result in them lashing out or letting anger out on the wrong people.
Violence

“Juveniles under 18 accounted for 13.7% of all violent crime arrests and 22.5% of all property crime arrests”
86.3% of teens are not committing any violent crimes and getting arrested, as well as 77.5% of teens are not committing any property crimes either. But Zits has gotten arrested in Flight, which would put him into the 13.7% of all violent crimes committed by teens under the age of 18. Not every teen is going to commit violent crimes, but that does not mean that it can not happen. Even though Zits did go into a bank and killed people, but that does not mean teens are just gonna go out and commit violent crimes just because teens are angry.

Building Confidence and Overcoming Low Self-Esteem in Teenagers

“Some signs of low self-esteem could be making bad choices, constantly criticizing and blaming themselves, or abusing drugs and alcohol”
Teens today can help improve their self-esteem better than Zits can due to teens having a wide range of ways to help improve their self-esteem. Teens can spend time with their loved ones, teens can look at the positives, and even acting confident even when the teen might not be, which are all ways that can help teens build their self-esteem. Meanwhile, Zits can do none of those things due to him not having a family. Zits does not think of himself highly, and Zits has not been in any situation where he was not confident in himself. But just because Zits can not do any of those things, does not mean that Zits can not improve his self-esteem, which he can, but it is very difficult.
Book appropriateness
I think children and teens should be able to read any book that they want because they will eventually read it and they should not have to wait to read a book. And besides, they will most likely hear about these books and they might want to read and I think they should. There should be some books that should be off-limits to kids, but for teens, there should not be any book that should be off-limits for teens. I think the books that adults might have issues with are books that contain language and sensitive subjects. And the reason I think this is that I do not think parents want children to be exposed to those types of books. But adults do have a good reason because they do not want their kids to be exposed to those books at a young age.
Connection from article to Ch. 4-5
There are multiple ideas that can connect the article to Flight the AIM is similar to IRON. The article states that “AIM was founded in 1968 by Russell Means, Dennis Banks, and other Native leaders as a militant political and civil rights organization.” And this can relate to Flight chapters 4 and 5 because IRON is an acronym for Indigenous Rights Now and they seem to want the same goal. Another idea that connects the article and to Flight and the idea is that both are taking place in 1975 because the article states “In 1975, two FBI agents and a Native man were killed in a shoot-out between federal agents and AIM members and local residents.” This can relate to Flight since chapters 4-5 are taking place in 1975 with 2 FBI agents and them killing a Native man.
Zits Character
The most important aspect of Zits’ character is probably his identity. I think that the most important element of Zits’ character is his identity because it shows who he really is as a person. He even says that he is a drunk which is important to his identity because we know more about his identity. And his identity is important since it makes up who he is and what kind of person he is. And he also said that he had lived in 20 different foster houses and 22 different schools which is another important detail about his identity since it shows that he doesn’t stay in a school or even a foster home that long.
I feel like Zits accurately depicts a teen since some things hint towards a sense of loneliness. On page 3, he said that he doesn’t like to think about his mom or dad which some teens could relate to since they could’ve had a parent who wasn’t the greatest. Even though there are times in the book where he doesn’t accurately depict a teen he is still somewhat accurate. Some teens can relate to him because of his being lonely others could relate to how he feels as his identity or even some might relate to his violence. There are some teens who might be able to relate to him because of their struggles.
Should We Change?
I think that we must change ourselves to fit into the world around us because the world always changes and people change with it. And if you don’t then you could be bullied or made fun of for it. For example, if you want to join a group or community you might have to change something about yourself in order for you to join the group and or community. The reason why I think this is because whenever new clothing comes out not everyone is going to be able to afford it but people are willing to do anything in order to fit in even if it means changing something about themselves. And especially in school because if the popular kids had asked you to hang out then you would probably have to change in order to fit in. The same goes for groups and or communities because if they are recruiting people to join their community and they don’t like something about but are still allowing to join only if you change something then you probably would.
Writing Background
The reason that we write is to express what we are thinking and how we are feeling. We write to people with letters to communicate. The reasons why people write are to become authors, become journalists, some want to leave a legacy, some want to make money, some want to discover creativity, and others to affect, or even entertain people.
Everyone who writes will have a different purpose to write than others. People will either write to try to inform people or just to meditate. A purpose is different for everyone some just want to write for fun but others might want to write to become an author.
The goals that people set for themselves is to improve their writing skills. For example, some people might set goals to become better at analyzing or work on their grammar skills. And others might want to entertain, persuade, or even inform.
